MEET SHARON(she/her)

~Certified Professional Midwife

~International Board Certified Lactation Consultant

Sharon is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Her approach to care centers on helping clients feel seen, heard, and deeply respected. She is passionate about supporting the whole person — physically, emotionally, and relationally — and believes that informed, individualized care is the foundation of safe and empowering birth experiences.

Sharon’s path into midwifery began during her own pregnancy while completing two B.A. degrees at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2009. That transformative experience clarified her calling: to support childbearing people and families with compassionate, holistic care throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

She began her work as a birth doula and La Leche League Leader in 2011, later training as a postpartum doula and volunteering with Postpartum Support Virginia. Over the years, Sharon has facilitated birth, breastfeeding, and postpartum support groups, offering education, presence, and steady support during life’s most profound transitions. She holds a deep passion for supporting clients experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and is committed to ensuring families receive thoughtful, informed mental health care.

Outside of the practice, Sharon is a devoted partner and mother to two children, along with a lively household of pets and plants. She finds grounding in music, movement, time outdoors, and moments of quiet reflection — practices that inform the calm, steady presence she brings to her midwifery care.

MEET NYE(she/her)

~Certified Professional Midwife

Nye is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and Licensed Midwife (LM) whose approach to care is grounded, relational, and deeply attuned to the wisdom of the body. She brings a calm, steady presence to her work, supporting families with clarity, trust, and respect throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.

Her path to midwifery began as a certified yoga and meditation teacher, where she developed a strong foundation in breath awareness, embodiment, and nervous system regulation. This work naturally expanded into birth and postpartum doula support, and ultimately led her to formal midwifery training through the Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery.

Nye’s clinical experience includes apprenticeships and externships with Sankofa Birth and Women’s Care (Durham, NC), In Due Season Pregnancy and Wellness Center (Zephyrhills, FL) and here at Sage Midwifery (Fairfax, VA). These experiences shaped her collaborative style and her commitment to continuity of care across the full childbearing year.

Outside of midwifery, Nye enjoys reading, listening to music, exploring farmers markets, traveling, and spending time in nature. She approaches both her work and her life with presence, curiosity, and appreciation for meaningful, grounded connection.

MEET SAM(she/her)

~Certified Professional Midwife

~Founder, Sage Midwifery

Sam is a proud queer midwife and mother of two, and the founder of Sage Midwifery. She established the practice in 2019 with a vision of building a community-centered space where clients feel safe, supported, and truly seen. Sam brings warmth, steady presence, and thoughtful guidance into every aspect of care—honoring each person’s unique fertility, pregnancy and birth journey with attentive listening and deep respect.

For more than 20 years, Sam has been a dedicated advocate for reproductive justice and social change. A native Texan raised in a family shaped by a strong matriarch, she learned early the values of hard work, resilience, and the power of a loving community. In 2006, she moved to Washington, D.C. to work in the social justice non-profit sector, and she has remained deeply involved in advocacy ever since. Sam has served on numerous boards and initiatives, including the Younger Women’s Task Force, the Arlington Commission on the Status of Women, NARAL Virginia, and the Virginia Midwives Alliance. She also co-founded Northern Virginia Take Back the Night and Rally Against Rape.

Sam’s path into birth work began with the birth of her son in 2011—a planned home birth that ultimately became a cesarean (belly birth). That experience sparked a calling that led her into midwifery. She began her midwifery education and clinical training in 2013, and during that time welcomed her daughter through a VBAC/HBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean/homebirth after cesarean), further deepening her passion for supporting families across the DC Metro Area. Sam trained under some of the region’s most experienced midwives, attending births in both home and birth center settings. She graduated from the National Midwifery Institute in 2019 and earned her B.A. from the University of North Texas in 2005.

Sam is a Certified Professional Midwife and a Licensed Midwife in both Virginia and Maryland. She lives in Springfield, VA with her spouse, two children, and hound dog. Outside of work, she enjoys community activism, caring for her houseplants and veggie garden, and spending time with friends.
